We've been in St. Louis for about two and a half days now. Here's my list of things we've noticed so far that we will have to adjust to:
1. Humidity. WOW. We are so not accustomed to humidity. Branden grew up in Minnesota and I lived in Oklahoma for a while so we've both experienced humidity before we just haven't lived with it for many years.
2. (Going out to eat at a sit-down restaurant) Hostess: "Smoking or non-smoking table?"
Us: *blink blink* "Umm, what?"
H: "Would you like to be seated at a table in the smoking section or the non-smoking section?"
Us: "Uh.... Non-smoking?"
I didn't know that there were still places that let you smoke in restaurants!
3. Bugs. There are lots of bugs and Branden has never really lived with the threat of roaches. I had the lovely chance to show him a dead one- thankfully not in our apt, but still on the premises- and got to explain to him what we would and would not be doing in an attempt to discourage their moving in to our living quarters. Roaches are not the only bugs, though. We hear cicadas at night, see June bugs hanging out near lights, lightning bugs flash in the dark, lots of flies, um, fly about... And there are other bugs that we haven't even seen yet.
4. Humidity. Really, we might die of humidity poisoning. Even with air conditioning blowing directly on you, the humidity makes you feel sticky.
5. Locking our car doors. I'm a lot better about this than Branden is. He seems to be getting better, though.
6. Locking our apt when we're in it. Remembering when we leave isn't hard, it's remembering when we're home that we need to work on. Our neighbors seem ok, but it's still a good idea for our own protection.
7. Hearing people in the halls and in the apt below us at all hours. There are kids in the apt below us and we live pretty much directly above the entrance to the building. We hear people on the stairs going in and out, the kids screaming, parents yelling, music from... Somewhere.
There are more things that we'll have to adjust to, but that's probably a big enough list for now. I'm sure I'll add more in the next few days. For the most part, we are feeling good about being here and are looking forward to the next steps in this adventure.
