I ran out of yogurt for my breakfast today. We discussed this and decided that we could handle going to the store if we ONLY bought a COUPLE of things we need and NOTHING else. So we picked up $3.00 of yogurt and 1/2 a gallon of milk a few other small things. We spent less than $15.00 and I felt pretty ok about that.
Happily, when we got home we checked our mail and we got a rebate check from our old internet provider! It's over $100 and it was totally unexpected- at least to me- so it's new, free money! Have I mentioned my feelings about rebates, refunds and buy-backs before?
Back when I was going to college, lots of my friends would complain that they paid $500 for books but when they sold them back at the end of the semester they only got $50 or so. Well, while I can understand the feelings, my philosophy is: I already spent that money- it's been gone for months!- so this is new money. :) It may not be entirely true, but it helps me be less bitter about things like getting less than half of a deposit back, etc.
I think this money is the deposit we paid when we very first set up our internet, though I don't know for certain. One way or the other... NEW MONEY and just when we really need it. :)
